Mechanism of action

Polyethylene glycol (PEG) is a non-absorbable polymer that creates an osmotic gradient in the gastrointestinal tract. Water is retained in the bowel lumen, softening stool and increasing intestinal motility to facilitate bowel cleansing and evacuation. It is commonly used for bowel preparation prior to colonoscopy or other GI procedures.
