Mechanism of action

Parenteral iron formulations (such as iron dextran, iron sucrose, or ferric carboxymaltose) are administered intravenously or intramuscularly to rapidly restore iron levels in patients with iron deficiency anemia who cannot tolerate or absorb oral iron supplements. The iron is transported to bone marrow and incorporated into hemoglobin and myoglobin, restoring oxygen-carrying capacity and correcting anemia.
