Mechanism of action
Supplemental oxygen therapy works by increasing the fraction of inspired oxygen (FiO2) delivered to the lungs, which elevates arterial oxygen saturation and partial pressure of oxygen (PaO2). This enhanced oxygen availability improves oxygen delivery to tissues, supporting aerobic metabolism and reducing hypoxemia in patients with respiratory insufficiency or oxygen desaturation.
Approved indications
- Hypoxemia and oxygen desaturation in hospitalized patients
- Respiratory support in acute and chronic respiratory conditions
Common side effects
- Oxygen toxicity (with prolonged high-concentration exposure)
- Drying of airways and mucous membranes
- Absorption atelectasis
