Mechanism of action
Opioids are agonists at mu, delta, and kappa opioid receptors, which are G-protein coupled receptors distributed throughout the brain, spinal cord, and peripheral tissues. Activation of these receptors inhibits neurotransmitter release and hyperpolarizes neurons, resulting in analgesia, sedation, and euphoria. They are primarily used for moderate to severe pain management in both acute and chronic settings.
