Mechanism of action
Normal saline (0.9% sodium chloride) is an isotonic crystalloid solution that maintains osmotic balance with blood plasma. It replaces lost intravascular volume, restores electrolyte concentrations (sodium and chloride), and serves as a vehicle for medication delivery. It is used to treat dehydration, hypovolemia, and electrolyte imbalances across multiple clinical settings.
Approved indications
- Fluid resuscitation and volume replacement in dehydration and hypovolemia
- Maintenance fluid therapy in hospitalized patients
- Vehicle for intravenous medication administration
- Electrolyte replacement (sodium and chloride)
Common side effects
- Hyperchloremic acidosis
- Fluid overload / Pulmonary edema (with excessive administration)
- Hypernatremia (with prolonged use)
