Mechanism of action

Nitroglycerin is metabolized to nitric oxide, which activates guanylate cyclase and increases cyclic GMP levels in vascular smooth muscle cells. This leads to smooth muscle relaxation and vasodilation of both arteries and veins, reducing preload and afterload on the heart and improving coronary blood flow. The transdermal patch formulation provides sustained drug delivery over 24 hours.
