Mechanism of action

This binding causes a decrease in the release of pain-producing neurotransmitters, such as substance P, and an increase in the release of pain-reducing neurotransmitters, such as endorphins. As a result, narcotic analgesics can provide effective pain relief, but they also carry a risk of dependence and addiction.
