Mechanism of action

NaHCO3 dissociates to provide bicarbonate ions that buffer hydrogen ions and increase blood pH. It is used to treat metabolic acidosis, alkalinize urine for certain drug overdoses or kidney stone prevention, and provide symptomatic relief of acid indigestion. The bicarbonate ion directly neutralizes gastric acid and systemic acidosis.
