Mechanism of action

Minoxidil works by dilating blood vessels in the scalp, improving nutrient and oxygen delivery to hair follicles. It also directly stimulates hair follicle growth and extends the active growth phase, shifting hairs from telogen (resting) to anagen (growth) phase. The exact molecular mechanism remains incompletely understood, but vasodilation and direct follicle stimulation are the primary proposed mechanisms.
