Mechanism of action

Magnesium oxide is poorly absorbed in the gastrointestinal tract and exerts an osmotic effect by retaining water in the intestinal lumen, thereby softening stool and promoting defecation. Additionally, the small fraction that is absorbed serves to replenish magnesium stores in the body, which is essential for numerous enzymatic and physiological functions including muscle and nerve function.
