Mechanism of action
This combination targets type 2 diabetes through complementary pathways: metformin acts as a biguanide that decreases liver glucose output and enhances peripheral insulin sensitivity, while vildagliptin is a dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitor that prolongs the action of endogenous GLP-1 and GIP, thereby stimulating glucose-dependent insulin secretion and suppressing glucagon. Together, they provide synergistic glycemic control with different mechanisms of action.
