Mechanism of action
Magnesium sulfate blocks calcium influx into cells and antagonizes N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptors, leading to decreased neuromuscular transmission and vasodilation. This mechanism underlies its use in seizure prophylaxis, particularly in eclampsia and preeclampsia, and as a tocolytic agent to delay preterm labor.
