Mechanism of action

Lignocaine (lidocaine) is a local anesthetic that reversibly inhibits sodium influx into nerve cells, preventing depolarization and blocking nerve conduction. The addition of sodium bicarbonate raises the pH of the solution, which increases the proportion of non-ionized lignocaine that can penetrate nerve tissue more readily, thereby accelerating onset and improving efficacy while reducing injection pain.
