Mechanism of action
L. reuteri colonizes the gastrointestinal tract and produces metabolites (such as reuterin) that inhibit pathogenic bacteria, strengthen the intestinal barrier, and promote the development of regulatory T cells and anti-inflammatory immune responses. This mechanism is thought to reduce inflammation, improve gut health, and prevent or treat conditions associated with dysbiosis and immune dysregulation.
