Mechanism of action

Intravenous saline (0.9% sodium chloride) is an isotonic crystalloid fluid that expands the intravascular compartment without causing osmotic fluid shifts. It replaces lost circulating volume in dehydration, hemorrhage, or shock states, and maintains serum sodium and chloride concentrations. The bolus form delivers rapid volume expansion for acute hemodynamic support, while continuous infusion maintains hydration and electrolyte homeostasis.
