Mechanism of action

Gentamicin irreversibly binds to the bacterial 30S ribosomal subunit, disrupting accurate mRNA translation and causing misreading of the genetic code. This results in production of non-functional proteins and ultimately bacterial cell death. When used as an irrigation solution, it provides local antimicrobial activity at the surgical site to reduce infection risk.
