Mechanism of action

Hypotonic solutions (such as 0.45% saline or 5% dextrose in water) have a lower osmotic pressure than plasma, causing water to shift from the extracellular space into cells. This mechanism is used clinically to treat hypernatremia and hyperosmolar states by restoring cellular hydration and normalizing serum osmolality.
