Mechanism of action
HIV antiretroviral therapy typically combines drugs from different classes (such as nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors, non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors, protease inhibitors, and integrase inhibitors) that target distinct viral enzymes and processes. This combination approach, known as highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART), suppresses viral replication, reduces viral load to undetectable levels, and allows immune system recovery. The multi-drug regimen also reduces the likelihood of developing drug-resistant viral strains.
