Mechanism of action
Mifepristone competitively blocks progesterone receptors in the uterus, preventing the hormone from maintaining pregnancy. This leads to detachment of the endometrium and cessation of pregnancy support. It is typically used in combination with a prostaglandin analog (such as misoprostol) to complete the abortion process.
