Mechanism of action
The solution contains glucose at varying concentrations (typically 1.5%, 2.5%, or 4.25%) that acts as an osmotic agent. When instilled into the peritoneal cavity, glucose draws fluid from the bloodstream across the peritoneal membrane into the dialysate, enabling removal of excess water and uremic toxins in patients with end-stage renal disease. The higher the glucose concentration, the greater the osmotic effect and ultrafiltration rate.
