Mechanism of action

Folic acid (vitamin B9) is a coenzyme essential for one-carbon transfer reactions required for DNA and RNA synthesis, while vitamin B12 (cobalamin) is necessary for methylation reactions and proper neurological function. Together, they prevent megaloblastic anemia and reduce the risk of neural tube defects in the developing fetus. Both vitamins are critical cofactors in homocysteine metabolism.
