Mechanism of action
Physiologic serum (normal saline, 0.9% sodium chloride) is an intravenous or topical fluid replacement therapy that mimics the electrolyte composition of blood plasma. It is used to restore intravascular volume, maintain electrolyte homeostasis, and support organ perfusion in dehydrated or critically ill patients. The solution is isotonic relative to blood, preventing osmotic shifts that could damage cells.
