Mechanism of action
Ferric maltol consists of ferric iron chelated with maltol, a small organic ligand that enhances iron absorption in the gastrointestinal tract. The maltol complex allows for improved oral bioavailability and tolerability compared to traditional iron salts, enabling efficient iron uptake to support hemoglobin synthesis and correct iron deficiency anemia.
