Mechanism of action
Most female contraceptives contain synthetic progestins and/or estrogens that inhibit the luteinizing hormone (LH) surge required for ovulation. They also thicken cervical mucus to impede sperm transport and thin the endometrium to prevent implantation. The specific formulation and hormone combination determine the contraceptive efficacy and side effect profile.
