Mechanism of action
Triptans bind to serotonin receptors, specifically the 5-HT1B and 5-HT1D receptors, which are located on the smooth muscle cells of blood vessels in the brain. This binding causes the blood vessels to constrict, which in turn reduces the inflammation and pain associated with migraines.
