Mechanism of action
Ethynyl estradiol is a synthetic estrogen that inhibits ovulation by suppressing the release of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) from the hypothalamus, which in turn reduces the production of luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) from the pituitary gland. Drospirenone, a progestin, has anti-androgenic and anti-mineralocorticoid effects, which contribute to its contraceptive efficacy.
