Mechanism of action
Vitamin D3 is a fat-soluble vitamin that undergoes hydroxylation in the liver and kidneys to form the active hormone calcitriol (1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3). This active metabolite binds to the vitamin D receptor (VDR) in target tissues, promoting intestinal calcium and phosphate absorption, regulating bone mineralization, and modulating immune cell differentiation and function. It plays a critical role in maintaining serum calcium levels and skeletal health.
