Mechanism of action

Clonidine binds to alpha-2 adrenergic receptors in the central nervous system, decreasing the release of norepinephrine and reducing sympathetic outflow. This results in decreased peripheral vascular resistance and lower blood pressure. When administered intravenously, it provides rapid onset of action for acute hypertensive episodes and perioperative hemodynamic management.
