Mechanism of action
Chlorhexidine is a cationic biguanide that binds to negatively charged bacterial cell membranes, causing leakage of intracellular contents and cell death. It also denatures bacterial proteins and inhibits bacterial enzymes. The rinse formulation allows direct contact with oral tissues and microorganisms, making it effective for reducing plaque and preventing gingivitis.
