Mechanism of action
Cefazolin works by disrupting the cross-linking of peptidoglycan in bacterial cell walls, leading to cell wall instability and bacterial death. It is bactericidal and has broad activity against gram-positive cocci and some gram-negative bacteria. When administered preoperatively, it provides prophylaxis against surgical site infections by achieving adequate tissue concentrations during the surgical procedure.
