Mechanism of action

Sodium ferric gluconate is a stable iron(III) complex that provides bioavailable iron for erythropoiesis when administered parenterally. The ferric iron is bound to gluconate ligands, which facilitates transport and cellular uptake while minimizing free iron-mediated oxidative damage. It is used primarily in patients with chronic kidney disease on hemodialysis who cannot tolerate or absorb oral iron supplementation.
