Mechanism of action

Antipsychotics typically block dopamine D2 receptors and/or serotonin 5-HT2A receptors, reducing hyperactivity in mesolimbic and mesocortical pathways associated with psychosis. This mechanism helps alleviate positive symptoms such as hallucinations and delusions, and some agents also improve negative symptoms and cognitive dysfunction.
