Ampicillin / sulbactam
Ampicillin / sulbactam is a Beta-lactam antibiotic with beta-lactamase inhibitor Small molecule drug developed by Medical University of Vienna. It is currently FDA-approved for Bacterial infections caused by beta-lactamase-producing organisms (skin and soft tissue infections, intra-abdominal infections, gynecological infections), Respiratory tract infections, Urinary tract infections. Also known as: Unasyn.
Ampicillin inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis while sulbactam inhibits bacterial beta-lactamase enzymes, together restoring ampicillin's activity against beta-lactamase-producing bacteria.

Mechanism of action
Ampicillin is a beta-lactam antibiotic that binds to penicillin-binding proteins and disrupts peptidoglycan cross-linking in bacterial cell walls. Sulbactam is a beta-lactamase inhibitor that irreversibly binds and inactivates bacterial beta-lactamase enzymes, preventing them from degrading ampicillin and extending its spectrum to include beta-lactamase-producing organisms.
